Signs That It Is Time To Replace Your Windows

Do you know how old the windows are in your home? Many homeowners aren’t able to tell you how old their windows are so they also don’t know when it’s time to replace the windows. Here are a few signs that indicate it is time to replace your windows. Be on the lookout for these warning signs before you end up with serious issues.

The first thing to do is to keep an eye on your energy bills. If your windows are drafty you will notice an increase in energy costs, both in the summer and winter. Drafty windows will force the heating system to work overtime in the winter to keep the house warm and will force the cooling system to work overtime in the summer to keep the house cool. If you notice a consistent increase in your energy bills it is probably time to see if there is a draft. One way to check for a draft is to check around the window frames to see if you can feel air coming in. 

The next thing to check is to see if you have single or double pane windows. This is not something you will need to check routinely but is just a one time check. If you still have single pane windows in your home, it is probably time to replace your windows. Not only do single pane windows not offer any soundproofing, they also don’t offer proper insulation and they are not energy efficient.

It is also important to check the window frames when determining if it’s time to replace your windows. Inspect the window frames and sills and check for any rot, decay, mold growth or visible damage. Be sure to check both the inside and the outside of your windows when checking the frames and sills. The presence of any of these probably means it’s time to replace your windows.

When you open your windows to let in a little fresh air, does it feel like a workout to get the windows pried open? You should be able to open your windows with ease and so it is important to periodically check the operation of the windows. If it is a struggle to open the windows it might be time to update and replace your windows.
